Optional Tour to ABU SIMBEL

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Abu Simbel where upon arrival, proceed to the Egypt Air ticket counter to reconfirm your return flight. From there proceed to the buses parked outside the terminal that will take you to the archaeological site. Our agent will provide you with the fees needed to purchase your entrance tickets. After walking a short distance you will view the most colossi temples in all of Egypt, and one of the best preserved. An English speaking guide/lecturer will meet you and conduct the tour. (This tour is run exclusively by Egypt Air).

Abu Simbel complex was built between 1300-1233 B.C. by one of the greatest Pharaohs, Ramses  II. At the entrance to the Great Temple are four colossal statues of Ramses II in a seated position. Each is over 65 feet high. On the left is a smaller statue of Ramses Mother, Queen Ti, and on the right stands a statue of Queen Nefertari, his favorite wife.

Twice a year at the equinox the sun rises directly in front of the temple, and its rays are meant to penetrate the innermost chamber, casting its light on the statues. This feature of the Abu Simbel Temple is considered one of the greatest engineering feats of all times. Upon the completion of the new Aswan Dam, the area between Aswan and the Sudan border was inundated by the Nile waters.

The salvage project to protect this temple began in 1965. The Temples were dismantled (all 400,000 tons of them) cut, created and reassembled in the exact positions as before at the top of the mountain cliff, ninety feet above the old site. It is truly a remarkable achievement. About fifty nations helped in the rescue operation and contributions from all over the world were made to help defray the cost. You may pass this way only once in a lifetime, but certainly, when you have seen Abu Simbel, you know that you have seen one of the great wonders of the world.

The best time to take pictures of the temples is in the morning. After sight seeing, you will take your return flight to Aswan where you will be met and transferred to your deluxe Nile cruise ship.
