You will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel.

 Wednesday     Palermo / Monreale / Marsala
After breakfast in hotel, the morning will be spent visiting the capital of Sicily Palermo, one of the richest towns in the island for its history and art. Palermo stands on a bay at the foot of Mt Pellegrino, a headland described by Goethe as the loveliest he had ever seen. While the Baroque predominates, there is a profusion of different architectural styles reflecting the city’s multicultural past, including an elegant opera house.  

Visit the wonderful Arab-Norman Cathedral, the astonishing Martorana Church and the amazing Cappella Palatina, an example from an historical and an artistic point of view, of how different cultures, religions and way of thinking apparently incompatible can coexist. Ruggero II in fact employed both Byzantine, Muslim and Latin workers. 

Continuing your walk you will admire the debated fountain in Pretoria Square, situated in the ancient Kalsa area and adorned with XVI century sculptures. Along the visiting day stop for a food surprise in the famous Antica Focacceria San Francesco. 

Afternoon proceed to Monreale to visit its huge Norman Cathedral, proclaimed the Eighth Wonder of the World, and its splendid Cloister in Arab-Norman style. 

In the afternoon continue to Marsala. Visit a prestigious wine cellar and wine tasting.

 Thursday     Marsala Salt Road / Selinunte / Agrigento
This morning the tour will continue along the charming and well-known Salt Road: the west coast of Sicily with many salt marshes, which have given rise to one of the oldest salt-extracting industries in the world.

 Between Trapani and Marsala they are now protected, in part because of the interesting birdlife, and also as important sites of industrial archaeology. On the way you will see the nice Island of Mothia (situated at the centre of a large lagoon in Marsala), known today as Stagnone, and the famous Salt Pans and windmills. 

Departure to Selinunte to visit the largest Archaeological Park in the whole Mediterranean and a World Heritage Site.  Surrounded by a splendid landscape near the African Sea, walk among the rests of the ancient Greek city. 

In the afternoon, transfer to Agrigento and visit of the Valley of the Temples stated a World Heritage Site, where among hundreds of almond trees, the rests of the ancient Akragas rise. It was defined by Pyndar “the most beautiful city of mortals”. Once one of the most prosperous of the ancient Greek cities on the island, Agrigento presents a remarkable series of Doric Temples of the 5 th century. You will see the “Temple of Hera”, the “Temple of Concordia” and the “Temple of Heracles”.

 Friday     Piazza Armerina / Ragusa  
Today proceed to reach Piazza Armerina where you can admire the splendid polychrome mosaics of the famous Villa Romana del Casale, World Heritage Site. The complex, which has some of the most extensive and most beautiful Roman mosaics known, is a World Heritage Site. This majestic villa, belonged to a member of the Roman Senatorial aristocracy, hosts prestigious mosaics representing mythological and historical episodes and scenes of hunting and entertainments.

 Afternoon departure to Ragusa Ibla and visit of its historical centre cradle of Sicilian baroque, with its Cathedral, situated in the beautiful square of the Dome and the “giardino Ibleo”. Used as a location of the extremely popular Police Inspector Montalbano TV series, it is today stated among the 44 Italian World Heritage Sites. This little precious ancient city, well known thanks to the Commissario Montalbano television series, hosts more than 50 churches and many Baroque architectural treasures. 

Conclude the visiting day with a tasting of local products.

 Sunday     Marsaxlokk Market and Blue Grotto
The idyllic fishing village of Marsaxlokk with its colorful luzzus and unique character make the unrivalled setting for the local market.  This is the perfect place to spend a Sunday morning, where you can rub your shoulders with the locals as your browse through the various stalls. 

Continue our tour with a visit to the Blue Grotto (weather permitting – boat price not included) and the nearby caves.  Admire the whole expanse of the blue Mediterranean and the islet of Filfla. 

Later our guide will help you explore one of Malta’s unspoiled villages.  From the main square, the hub of the village with its parish church and band club, you will be led through a maze of narrow streets that all have a story to be told. (b)

 Monday     Sliema / Gozo / Sliema
full day including lunch

After breakfast in the hotel begin morning tour to Malta’s sister island of Gozo.

After a twenty-minute ferry crossing, on setting foot in Gozo you will notice that although both islands are similar in history and development Gozo has a character entirely of its own. Gozo, which is a three hilled island, is greener and more picturesque than Malta. 

Lunch included.

During this excursion, you will visit the Azure Window at Dwejra, the citadel in Victoria, the bay of Xlendi, and we also stop at a spectacular cultural experience depicting Gozo’s long and colorful history.

Free time for shopping will also be given – Gozo is known for its woolen goods and handmade lace.

Tuesday     Medina
full day including lunch

Today’s excursion takes us to the central part of Malta denominated by the medieval fortified city of Mdina, Malta’s former capital city.  The narrow winding streets, dating back to medieval times, lead to the imposing bastions, commanding a magnificent panorama of the island. On the way there, you will discover different styles of architecture, including Siculo-Norman palaces and other baroque buildings of great historical importance.  Time stands still in this “Silent City which is a film-maker’s paradise.  

Leaving Mdina through Greek’s Gate, stop at the early Christian catacombs in Rabat before proceeding to the cliffs at Dingli. 

Lunch included. 

Afternoon visit the San Anton botanical gardens situated near the Presidential Palace which you will be able to admire from outside.  You will also spend time at the crafts centre at Ta’ qali.   

At the end of the tour, visit Mosta’s majestic dome, one of Europe’s largest. (b,l)

 Wednesday     Three Cities                              
Discover the Grand Harbour area opposite Valetta known as the Three cities – Vittoriosa, Cospicua and Senglea where the Knights of St John first settled in 1530. 

Driving past Cospicua we reach Vittoriosa for a walking tour through the narrow streets in the shade of the historic buildings, including the first auberges of the various languages of the Order. 

At the Vittoriosa waterfront, you will take a typical harbor boat (dghajsa) for a tour of the colorful harbor creeks.  From the Senglea garden, situated at the tip of the peninsula, enjoy a stunning 360 degrees view of the Grand Harbour including the impressive Fort Sant Angelo from where Grand Master La Valette led the defense of the island during the Great Siege of 1565.  (b)

OPTIONAL - afternoon Harbor cruise to discover the beauty of Valletta’s two natural harbours; Marsamxett and the Grand Harbour.  Both have played a vital role in Malta’s history.   Seen from the sea, Valletta appears in all its grandeur, providing photographers with the best opportunity for original pictures. After the cruise you will have time to stroll along Sliema’s main shopping area, where you can also relax in one of the many cafés.
